We have been trying to work out the best way of accessing money whilst we are travelling and have come across numerous ways of doing this but they all seem a bit of hard work!
I couldn’t work out why I couldn’t just take my money out of my bank and spend it without facing numerous charges.
If you’re from the UK….
I searched almost everywhere and almost settled for the fact that I would end up with cash cards, travellers cheques or numerous accounts in varying locations and face transfer charges. And then I found Norwich & Peterborough Gold Account (I know, I’ve never heard of them either!) and Halifax Clarity Credit Card. These accounts are for UK residents only sadly but I am sure every country has a similar account. There are no charges for withdrawing and spending money whilst abroad. I know, I couldn’t believe it either!
The catch is you have to either deposit £500 a month into the account which may be ok or have at least £5000 in the account which shouldn’t be an issue when you first start to travel. Without either of these criteria being met, there is a £5 a month fee which would still work out cheaper than paying numerous times every time you take money out. This will also mean carrying less cash around as you will be able to draw money out more often in smaller amounts reducing the risk of it getting lost or stolen.
The Halifax credit card doesn’t charge you for any transaction’s abroad or withdrawing cash which will hopefully save you some money too. I’ve put the links below to both accounts but if you know of any others that are better, please let me know.
An alternative way…
There is a new smart bank account that is linked to your smart phone. The bank is called Mondo, it is currently being registered but is available. This account is great because it comes with a great analysis of your spending, no charges anywhere in the world and no minimum amount to be transferred. This is definitely the future of banking.
If you are not able to get these accounts, have a search. It will be worth the time investment of searching for a bank with no charges. This will save a lot of money over the period of your travels.
Hopefully this will save you some time in looking and save you some money and/or fuss!
